The name Ogden
is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo Saxon tribes of Britain. It
is a product of when the family lived near an oak valley, or came from
a place called Ogden, in West Yorkshire, Ogden is a local surname, which
belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. There are a variety of
types of local surnames, some of which include: topographic surnames, which
could be given to a person who lived beside any physical feature, such
as a hill, stream, church or type of tree. Habitation names formed the
other broad category of surnames that where derived from place – names.

manors, estates, regons, and entire counties. The surname Ogden originated
in Somerset, but became prominent in Lancashire, where members of the family
had been settled since the early Middle ages.
Spelling variations include: Ogden Okden, Oakden, Ogdon, Odgen and others. First found in Lancashire where they were seated from early times and there first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of there subjects.
